After The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi scored 93% and 91% respectively, there wasn't much of a reason to expect critics to give Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker any less than around 85-90%, even with the belief among many that J.J. Abrams would undo many of The Last Jedi's more controversial decisions.

But to the collective shock of the entire Star Wars fanbase, the "final" movie in the Skywalker Saga was wildly polarising among critics, scoring the worst reviews of any live-action Star Wars movie since The Phantom Menace 20 years prior.

In fact, The Rise of Skywalker only rates 1% higher than The Phantom Menace on the Tomatometer, which is about as damning an indictment of the film's quality as critics could possibly muster.

Though most expected it to be a fairly unimaginative crowd-pleaser at worst, few could've expected quite how violently critics and fans alike would turn on the disappointing trilogy-capper.

Worse still, The Rise of Skywalker scored a "B+" CinemaScore, the lowest of the live-action series, and its final box office haul is projected to be the lowest of the sequel trilogy. A massively underwhelming and totally shocking "ending" for the series, then.
