20 Most Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Scores Of 2019
14. Terminator: Dark Fate (70%)
The critical response to the sixth (!) Terminator film was bizarre for several reasons.
First and foremost, its 70% score made it the first critically praised entry into the franchise since 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (69%), and secondly, there was a massive disparity between the critical and fan responses.
Though fans are typically more forgiving than critics, in this case they took massive exception to Dark Fate's opening decision to kill off John Connor (Edward Furlong), enough that some analysts have suggested it contributed to the film's colossal box office failure.
And even though Dark Fate landed a mediocre "B+" CinemaScore from audiences - the same score as the three previous Terminator films - 70% of critics gave it a recommendation, yet most reviews were strictly in the three-star territory.
More than anything, critics just seemed relieved that it wasn't uniformly terrible like the previous two entries, despite how lazily it riffed off the first two Terminators.
