2. The TV - The Ring (1998)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbj-Ihy3ncQ The Ring revolves around a cursed videotape and its connection to a scary girl named Sadako who was drowned in a well. If you watch the videotape you get a phone call to tell you that you will die in a week. Reiko Akasawa is a journalist whose niece and her friends suddenly died together. She watches the video and gets the call - she is now cursed and must race against time to unravel the source of the curse. She enlists the help of Ryuji Takayama - her ex husband. Their investigating leads them to an island where they learn the whole history of a girl thrown into a well for having psychic powers. Keiko and Ryuji dig Sadako out of the well and assume they have broken the curse. The next day, Ryuji is home alone when his TV suddenly switches on and he can see a well on the screen. To Ryuji's horror and the viewer's horror Sadako gets out of the well and walks towards the screen, black hair hanging round her face. She comes out of the television and frightens Ryuji so much he dies of a cardiac arrest. We are all collectively wetting ourselves in fright during this scene. Malevolent television goings on are not new to cinema - see Poltergeist. But Sadako with her evil, vengeful eye busting out of the screen was a real shocker in the scary TV based stakes.
