20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century
5. The Fountain (2006)
This endlessly complex sci-fi drama was directed by Darren Aronofsky, so let it be known that The Fountain is far from a light viewing experience. But that doesn't mean you should pass it by.
There's no denying that the non-linear structure and Hugh Jackman's frequently challenging quest to defeat death in the name of love can be difficult to follow, but considering its undeniable beauty and spirituality, it's a journey well worth taking.
A rich blending of fantasy, sci-fi and romance, The Fountain moves between countless complex themes throughout its relatively short 96 minute runtime, and though there are moments where it seems a bit overambitious, it's constantly kept afloat by its philosophical assessments and Jackman's powerful lead performance.
For some - as with any Aronofsky film - The Fountain is a divisive experience, either seen as illogical and pretentious or profound and rewarding. Regardless of your thoughts on the finished product, though, there's no denying that its visual appeal and life-affirming humanity is anything but inspired.
