20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century
4. A Scanner Darkly (2006)
Perhaps the most surprising and underrated movie in Richard Linklater's eclectic filmography, A Scanner Darkly casts Keanu Reeves as Bob Arctor, an undercover cop sent to immerse himself in the drug empire that has taken over America.
Based on Philip K. Dick's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, A Scanner Darkly was made using a state of the art animation technique called interpolated rotoscoping, which gives the characters a distinctive glossy, life-like look.
This animation style works perfectly with the film's dark tone, as Bob takes on the seedy underbelly of American politics, the war on drugs and his own hidden addictions.
Some critics have referred to the film in the past as more of an "experience" than a great movie, but that's too hard on Reeves' scene-stealing performance and the film's daring plot twists. Besides, when the "experience" is this good, it's worth checking out for its visual appeal alone.
