20 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The 21st Century
2. 9 (2009)
Following a Terminator-esque war between man and machine, humanity is extinct. In the world's carnage, a ragdoll (Elijah Wood) inexplicably wakes and finds himself in the company of several other dolls, all intent on surviving the horrors of the outside world and finding peace.
Wood is joined by the voice talents of John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connolly and Christopher Plummer, in a film that defies genre. Is it sci-fi? Fantasy? Mystery? Post-apocalyptic drama? Surrealist survival flick?
9 is all of these things and more, featuring a series of great scares, stunning animation and voice work, and is just weird enough to justify it becoming a cult classic.
Best of all, though, is how quickly everything unfolds. Outside of its epic action sequences and staggering character development, the film's only 80 minutes long, and flies by at breakneck speed without missing a single beat.
