18. The Random Russian Family Subplot - Justice League
It's no secret that the theatrical "Whedon Cut" of Justice League is an absolute mess - a Frankenstein's monster of conflicting moods and tones as Warner Bros. desperately scrambled to release a film they thought might actually make bank at the box office.
Perhaps the most questionable addition of all is Whedon's inclusion of a terrible subplot where The Flash (Ezra Miller) rescues a Russian family from Steppenwolf's (Ciaran Hinds) carnage nearby.
Introducing random human characters into an epic set-piece is nothing new for Whedon - he did it on both of his Avengers movies - but it's never felt more transparently throwaway, even pointless, than it did here.
It just felt like a low-effort way to try and raise the stakes despite these characters being thrown at the audience with little context or reason to care about them. Yawn.
