4. The "Bear" - Annihilation

Annihilation's trippy third act was only barely out-WTF'd by the infamous "bear" sequence earlier in the film. After Cassie (Tuva Novotny) is dragged away by a bear-like creature and mauled to death, the animal returns later just after a paranoid Anya (Gina Rodriguez) has restrained the other women and begun to interrogate them.

At that moment, Cassie can be heard crying from outside the building, and soon enough the bear-monster comes inside. When it opens its mouth, Cassie's dying screams can be heard (implying that the Shimmer has fused them together somehow).

Anya attacks the bear, which promptly mauls her and rips her jaw off, and just as it heads for Lena (Natalie Portman), Josie (Tessa Thompson) makes the save by shooting a mag of bullets in its face, killing it.

This is an expertly executed sequence that milks the bear's horrific conception for every drop of suspense it's worth. Those screams will linger with you for days and days.
