5. Charlie Loses Her Head - Hereditary

Hereditary is a film full of raw, visceral and wildly unexpected moments, but nothing is more shocking than the brutal act that concludes its first act.

After Peter (Alex Wolff) takes his younger sister Charlie (Milly Shapiro) to a high school party and she has an allergic reaction to a chocolate cake filled with nuts, a stoned Peter frantically drives Charlie to the nearby hospital.

However, Charlie sticks her head out of the window as she desperately tries to get more air in her lungs, and when Peter swerves to avoid a dead animal, her head is smashed into a telephone pole.

Though at first it seems like Charlie may have "only" broken her neck, we're subsequently shown Charlie's decapitated head lying in the middle of the road the next morning (with ants feasting on it for good measure).

The combination of Peter's shell-shocked response and mother Annie's (Toni Collette) grief-stricken cries of "I want to die" upon discovering the corpse make this one of the most legitimately upsetting and brain-searingly traumatic scenes from any movie, horror or not, of the last few years.
