2. The Snap - Avengers: Infinity War

The prospect of Thanos (Josh Brolin) snapping his fingers and wiping out half the universe was teased so much ahead of Infinity War's release that many suspected the Russo brothers wouldn't actually go through with it. Oh, how wrong they were.

After the Avengers put up a gallant fight against the Mad Titan, he rewinds time, steals the Mind Stone from Vision (Paul Bettany) and inserts it into the Infinity Gauntlet. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) makes one last ditch effort to stop Thanos, but all it does is wound him, at which point he tells the Asgardian, "You should've gone for the head."

Thanos then snaps his fingers, which progressively causes the likes of Bucky (Sebastian Stan), T'Challa, Groot (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and most heartbreakingly of all, Peter Parker (Tom Holland), to turn to dust.

Even though it'll obviously all be undone in Avengers 4, it's nevertheless one of the most shocking moments in comic book history, and one that cemented Thanos as an all-time bada** supervillain. He won, and then he even got to chill out with a beautiful sunset before the credits rolled. Incredible.
