5. Cleo's Stillbirth - Roma

Alfonso Cuarón's Roma is a film filled with wonderfully, quietly devastating moments, and none proves tougher to watch than maid Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio) giving birth to a stillborn baby girl.

Unfolding over a single unbroken take, we watch doctors perform CPR on the baby while Cleo agonisingly looks on, until she's sadly informed that the baby has died.

Cleo's briefly able to hold her departed daughter, though the rushed-off-their-feet staff give her only a moment to say goodbye before wrapping the baby in a shroud to prep for the funeral.

Thanks to Aparicio's brilliant performance, the evocative monochrome cinematography and a frighteningly lifelike baby prosthetic, this scene really hits viewers in the gut.
