8. Nick Fury Loses An Eye...To A "Cat" - Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel subverted expectations in a number of ways, some lauded by fans and others more divisive. In the divisive camp, nothing was more surprising than the means through which Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) ended up losing an eye.

While most fans expected Fury to receive an ocular injury after being tricked by the Skrulls, he actually loses an eye after being scratched in the face by Goose, the alien Flerken which takes the form of a cat.

At the time, it's played for such a laugh that most audiences probably assumed it was just a playful fake-out, but by the end of the movie, it's clear that a cat - or, rather, a shapeshifting alien - caused him to require the use of an eye patch.

But hilariously, Fury is clearly embarrassed by the story, so effectively propagates the vague myth that something more interesting happened to him. It works, even if it's easy to appreciate why some fans were disappointed with such a flippant explanation.
