6. Meryl Streep Wears "Brownface" - The Laundromat

Even accepting the WTF moment that Steven Soderbergh finally made a bad movie, his Panama Papers drama The Laundromat makes one intensely ill-advised decision, to have Meryl Streep play two separate characters - or three if you count a fourth wall-breaking moment where she also plays herself (don't ask).

The first is a white American woman not unlike herself, while the second is Elena, a Panamanian secretary. Streep wears a fatsuit, prosthetics, and has her skin mildly "browned-up" for the part, while donning a potentially offensive stereotypical accent.

While the actual make-up itself is relatively good, it's baffling to see an actor of Streep's caliber and a filmmaker of Soderbergh's skill think that this is just fine.

Was the gimmick really more important than actually hiring, say, a Panamanian actress to play the part instead? Bizarre.
