17. No Songs, No Mushu - Mulan

Capone Tom Hardy
Disney

As much as Mulan was one of Disney's better recent live-action remakes, it was nevertheless divisive with purist fans, who felt that it simply strayed too far from the beloved animated original.

The two major complaints? First off, the musical numbers from the original film are nowhere to be heard, replaced instead with instrumental versions.

Director Niki Caro stated that this was to give a greater air of "realism" - a claim that doesn't really hold up given the film's unambiguously fantastical tone.

But perhaps even more criminal than the musical omissions is the deletion of fan favourite sidekick Mushu, the wise-cracking dragon voiced so brilliantly by Eddie Murphy in the original.

Mushu was reportedly removed from the remake due to the character's negative reception in China, yet his absence was sorely felt by fans of the 1998 film.
