13. Edna's Final Form - Relic

Capone Tom Hardy
IFC Midnight

Natalie Erika James' striking debut Relic is one of the year's most evocative horror films, a terrifically acted and deeply upsetting look at the physical and mental decline of a woman, Edna (Robyn Nevin), suffering with dementia.

Throughout the film, Edna's daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) find themselves increasingly haunted by physical manifestations of her dementia, while Edna herself begins to literally decay, with her skin appearing bruised and rotted.

At film's end, Kay carries a decrepit Edna to bed and peels away what remains of her flesh, revealing an ashen, corpse-like figure underneath. Kay and Sam then lay on the bed with Edna until she expires, finally being set free from her torment.

As hauntingly moving as this scene is, the ending also reveals that Kay has a similar bruise on her own neck, suggesting that she will follow in her mother's tragically doomed footsteps.
