20 Most WTF Movie Moments Of 2021
4. The Whole Damn Movie - Music
Sia's musical drama Music is really just one long montage of WTF moments, as the singer-filmmaker attempts to convey the experiences of an autistic person through elaborate, surreal song-and-dance numbers and mawkish melodrama.
Well-intended though it certainly is, Music ranks as one of the most misguided movies of the last few years, not least that actress Maddie Ziegler is neither autistic herself nor does she give a particularly convincing or sensitive performance, defined as it is by over-the-top tics and gurning.
Then there's the fact that the autistic title character is ultimately used here to further the emotional development of her neurotypical half-sister Zu (Kate Hudson), making her feel more like a storytelling prop than the focus that the title implies.
But by far the single most WTF-worthy moment of the entire movie is the infamous prone restraint scene, where Zu subdues her acting-out sister by restraining her on the ground and laying on top of her.
The scene was widely criticised by autism advocates, given that prone restraint is a highly controversial technique which has resulted in suffocation deaths. And yet, it'd be easy for general audiences to come away from Music believing that this was an acceptable way to calm down an autistic person.
Sia ended up removing the scene from later theatrical versions of her film, but that did little to remedy its already firmly cemented reputation as a totally unhinged vanity project entirely lacking in self-awareness.
