20 Movie Characters Who Never Got The Comeuppance They Deserved

10. Dark Shadows - Barnabus Collins

Pinocchio Honest John
Warner Bros. Pictures

Dark Shadows is one of the absolute low points of Tim Burton's career, thanks in no small part to how weirdly nasty the entire thing is. Burton's earlier films were able to mix light and dark really well, but this one is just cruel, more than anything else, and it never seems to have any self-awareness of just how nasty a lot of its story actually is.

Nearly everyone in this movie is unlikable, including, most damagingly, Dark Shadow's vampire 'protagonist' Barnabus Collins (Johnny Depp). He murders at least 20 innocent people for food throughout the film and never gets any punishment for it whatsoever. Well, his initial feeding on the workmen who unintentionally set him free seemed like a moment of thirst-driven madness, but he later dispatches a crowd of hippies and is totally aware of what he's doing.

Though Barnabus expresses regret for these deaths, there's never any sort of proper retribution for it, and jarringly, the movie continues to present him as the good guy. He actually gets a happy ending and is presumably allowed to live in freedom with Victoria (Bella Heathcote), his love interest. Well, the families of all those people he butchered might've had a thing or two to say about that.
