20 Movie Sequels Everyone Knew Were A Huge Mistake (But Still Got Made)

12. Pacific Rim Uprising

Pacific Rim wasn't high art, but it was a damn fun time courtesy of Guillermo del Toro's typically exquisite filmmaking and the game efforts of a rock solid cast.

So of course there were many raised eyebrows when it was announced that 2018's sequel Pacific Rim Uprising wouldn't be directed by del Toro - apparently because the studio failed to reserve shooting soundstages in Toronto, where the director needed to be based while prepping his next film, The Shape of Water.

On top of this, original lead Charlie Hunnam was puzzlingly absent from the sequel, while co-star Rinko Kikuchi returned for only a mere cameo.

This all screamed a sequel that would turn out a pale shade of its predecessor, and the marketing in the lead up to the film's release did little to dissuade from that notion.

The truly sad outcome is that Pacific Rim Uprising was just totally forgotten within a few short weeks of release - not bad enough to be fun or interesting, just an aggressively beige, franchise-killing blockbuster.
