Denis Villeneuve had a lot riding on his shoulders when he was revealed to be directing a sequel to Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner. Luckily, Villeneuve is one of the finest directors currently working, and his vision for Blade Runner 2049 proved to be almost as good as the original.

Set thirty years after the first film's mysterious conclusion, the sequel follows Ryan Gosling's replicant K as he's sent after Harrison Ford's long-missing protagonist Rick Deckard when he uncovers a life-changing threat.

Filmed with deft care by cinematography maestro Roger Deakins and bursting with unforgettable set pieces, effects and action sequences, 2049 is admittedly a slow-burn not built for everyone, but in the way it honours the original film and creates its own compelling identity is nothing short of a masterstroke that begs to be seen.
