20 Movie Sequels That Are Totally Flawless

12. Evil Dead II (1987)

Evil Dead II is a sequel that almost never was, and was only ever considered for production because author Stephen King talked it up to producer Dino De Laurentiis, and Sam Raimi had suffered a major a career set-back with genuinely awful horror-comedy Crimewave.

Luckily, fate was on Raimi's side, and he was given the opportunity to craft a follow-up to his iconic cult horror The Evil Dead, only this time he was intent on upping the gore, slapstick, violence and frequently silly but still effective horror to an almost unbearable level.

Following Bruce Campbell's hero Ash as he comes into contact with an ancient curse in a cabin in the woods, Evil Dead II is as riotously funny as it is off-the-wall horrific, combining bonkers comedy with shocking scares. As far as horror movie sequels go, this is the benchmark every film should be aiming for.
