20 Movie Sequels That Were JUST Confirmed

Though originally intended for a theatrical release, Sony's animated film The Mitchells vs. The Machines was sold to Netflix amid the pandemic and released in April 2021 to rave reviews, record-breaking viewership, and an eventual Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

While in late 2021 director Mike Rianda stated his enthusiasm to produce a sequel, word largely went quiet on a follow-up until four years later, when in October 2025 Netflix finally confirmed that The Mitchells vs. The Machines 2 was indeed happening.

There's nothing like striking while the iron is cold, eh?

Though the original film hasn't really clung around in the pop-culture zeitgeist over the last five years, it's well-regarded enough that many are likely still excited to see another adventure featuring these characters - hopefully one that substitutes out the machines for another apocalyptic calamity.

No word yet on when we meet see it, but with main production set to begin early next year, 2027 or 2028 seems likely.
