20 Movie Sequels That Were JUST Confirmed
9. Mortal Kombat III
Generally speaking, studios wait until a film has been released before announcing a sequel, to ensure that it first provides a satisfactory box office return.
But in October, Warner Bros. took the unexpected step of confirming that a third Mortal Kombat movie was already in the works with Mortal Kombat II writer Jeremy Slater tapped to pen the script.
Considering that this announcement was made a full seven months before the film's May 8, 2026 release, it certainly suggests that Warner Bros. is enormously confident in the second film, which wrapped shooting almost two years ago and was previously set to release this past October.
Though many pointed to the lengthy release delay as a sign the movie could be in trouble, the early Mortal Kombat III announcement definitely indicates the opposite, that Warner Bros. fully believes in the vision going forward.
And considering the second film will introduce Karl Urban as franchise icon Johnny Cage, they just might have good reason to believe they've got a fat hit on their hands.
