11. Sam Shepard
The multi-talented Sam Shepard worked as an actor,
screenwriter, director and playwright throughout his 50-year-long career. He
received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as
real-life pilot-turned-astronaut Chuck Yeager in Philip Kaufman’s 1983 epic The
Right Stuff while other acting credits include Terrence Malick’s Days of
Heaven, Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down and black comedy-drama August: Osage
County.
Shepard’s screenwriting credits include Michelangelo’s cult 1970 film Zabriskie Point and Wim Wenders’ critically acclaimed road movie Paris, Texas which scooped him a BAFTA nomination while his theatrical work earned him a total of ten Obie Awards for writing and directing and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his 1979 play Buried Child.
