18. Roy Batty (Blade Runner)
In the classic sci-fi Blade Runner, the villain Roy Batty is an escaped replicant, a robotic variant of man with a predetermined lifespan. Roy and his companions attempt to find the inventor of the replicants and the man behind the Tyrell corporation which creates them. Powerful and violent, the replicants react against their environment the way a rabid dog would if it was poked with a pointy stick. Roy's run-ins with Sebastian and Tyrell himself have expectedly disastrous consequences, with Roy fulfilling some deeply seeded Oedpial bloodlust. He ultimately battles with our hero Deckard, nearly killing him before giving up his fight.
Why We Can't Help But Love Him: Its Roy's humanity, despite being a replicant, that makes us like him. His cosmic endeavors give the film an existential quality, asking us what it is to exist. Roy, despite his faults, is a being whose four years alive have been endowed with beautiful experiences.
