20 Movies Every Nerd Must See Before They Die

19. Serenity (2005)

Joss Whedon's beloved sci-fi TV series Firefly was unceremoniously cancelled by Fox, but fans were given this kinda-sorta big screen send-off which is an exhilarating, hilarious and heartfelt romp regardless of whether or not you've seen the original show. Continuing on from where the series left off, the dangerous Alliance has sent a ruthless assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor) to capture powerful telepath River Tam (Summer Glau), but he'll have to go through Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew first. Serenity features some of Whedon's best writing to date, likely because this was made more for passion than profit, and though full of fan service, is just as accessible for newbies, what with its thrilling action sequences and loveable characters. The only downer (apart from that character death) is that it flopped at the box office, killing any chances of a sequel or series revival.
