20 Movies Every Nerd Must See Before They Die

16. Big Trouble In Little China (1986)

John Carpenter's 80s action comedy is a must-see for any card-carrying nerd, a ridiculous mash-up of sorcery, wild gunplay, grotesque monsters and...Kurt Russell being a total bada** (as if he has to try). This is an infectiously entertaining movie which doesn't hold its fairly forgettable narrative in much regard, but is instead all about riveting action and a total charm offensive from its awesome cast (also including Kim Cattrall as Russell's apparent love interest and the superb James Hong as the villainous David Lo Pan). Russell and Carpenter go together like PB & J, and Russell unveils one of his all-time best characters here: it's a genuine shame the film bombed at the box office, as a Jack Burton franchise could have been a beautiful thing. The jury's out on whether the Dwayne Johnson-led remake will be any good (assuming it actually ever happens).
