It's been a historic year for the genre.

Before we know it, 2022 will have drawn to a close, and as the end of the year gets ever nearer, there's been a growing sentiment from horror fans that 2022 has been something of a banner year for the genre.

Nobody knows precisely why, yet the past 10 months have seen an over-the-odds number of high-quality horror films come down the pike, from big-budget entries into established franchises, to lower budget art-house hits that came totally out of nowhere.

Basically, horror fans are eating right now, and whether you're venturing out to your nearest multiplex or gobbling it up at home on streaming, you've been especially spoiled for choice for content this past year.

We can only hope that we're in the midst of a Golden Age of Horror and 2023 will follow in a similar suit, but even if not, these are the terrifically inventive, gory, hilarious, and generally messed up horrors from 2022 you absolutely, positively need to see.

Though the year isn't quite over yet, these are the 20 horror films sure to be on everybody's lips for the rest of 2022 and beyond...

One of the biggest horror surprises near the start of the year was Ti West's new film X - a beautifully shot homage to classic exploitation slasher flicks that had plenty to say about the genre's uniquely icky relationship with sex.

Powered by a strong ensemble cast - and led by an outstanding Mia Goth in a demanding dual role - X managed to be both a satisfyingly grisly throwback to horrors of yore and one which knowingly updated some of the genre's crustiest tropes.

And because one great movie wasn't enough, West soon enough revealed that he'd filmed a prequel, Pearl, back-to-back with X - which will be showing up on this list a little while later.
