20 Movies That Prove 2022 Is The Best Year For Horror EVER

18. Watcher

Pearl Mia Goth

Chloe Okuno's Watcher is a gut-wrenchingly tense, Hitchcockian horror in which a young woman, Julia (Maika Monroe), comes to believe that a man (Burn Gorman) living in the apartment building opposite might be a serial killer terrorising young women.

Making brilliantly eerie use of its gorgeous Bucharest setting, Watcher perfectly encapsulates the loneliness and anxiety that comes with residing in a country where you don't know the language, further elevated by an outstanding central performance from the great Maika Monroe.

Shot with claustrophobic unease by Okuno and cinematographer Benjamin Kirk Nielsen, Watcher is an efficient and highly effective exercise in confirming the horrors felt by women simply desperate to be believed by society at large.
