20 Movies That Prove 2022 Is The Best Year For Horror EVER

Arriving almost an entire decade after Scream 4 - which under-performed at the box office - there was a ton of pressure on the fifth Scream film to reignite the series' zeitgeist appeal while living up to the late Wes Craven's legacy.

And that Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett largely did with Scream, which while perhaps pushing some of the legacy heroes a bit too far into the periphery, offered up another bout of thoroughly self-aware comedy-horror with plenty of satirical bite.

Cannily examining how horror and indeed media consumption as a whole has changed over the last decade, Scream successfully resurrected a flagging IP in a way that won it a new generation of fans while refusing to alienate those who've stuck with it the entire time.

Scream's phenomenal box office success led to a sixth film being greenlit, which has already been shot and is due for release this coming March.
