Jordan Peele levelled-up his filmmaking big time with his new sci-fi horror Nope, which while lacking the jolting social commentary of his previous films Get Out and Us, nevertheless succeeded as a ferociously off-kilter alien invasion yarn.

Making shrewd use of large-format IMAX cameras, Peele ensured that every penny of his $68 million budget was on the screen, for an epic, materially strange, and at times totally horrifying riff on a familiar genre with a distinct Jordan Peele flavour.

Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, and especially Keke Palmer give terrific performances in the central roles, and while the outcome may not have satisfied everyone, the runaway ambition of Peele's movie is well worth lauding. Here's to whatever he's making next.
