20 Movies That Will Win Oscars In 2023
8. The Son
When it was still sight-unseen, most Oscar pundits pegged The Son - director Florian Zeller's follow-up to The Father - to be a frontrunner in most major categories.
Given that The Father won two Oscars and remains one of the most acclaimed dramas of the last decade, expectations were high that The Son - also adapted from one of his own feted plays - would repeat similar success.
Yet reviews were shockingly lukewarm out of Venice, more-or-less obliterating the film's serious chances at winning Best Picture or Director.
There are a few awards still on the table, though: nominations for Adapted Screenplay and Actor (Hugh Jackman) are likely, and if the right PR narrative builds around Jackman as "deserving" of the win - especially if The Whale's buzz cools off - he could easily take the gong home.
