20 Movies That Will Win Oscars In 2023
7. All Quiet On The Western Front
Like the documentary field, Best International Feature is a notoriously tricky beast to predict, with a number of rapturously received international films usually getting missed off the shortlist.
But some serious frontrunners have emerged in recent weeks and months: Park Chan-wook's Decision to Leave (Korea), Holy Spider (Denmark), RRR (India), Close (Belgium), and All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany).
And the latter, a second adaptation Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 war novel, has received rave reviews out of TIFF, with many calling it a worthwhile update of the original 1930 film version.
Given that the 1930 film won the Oscar for Best Picture, a critically acclaimed retelling is instantly propelled to the front of the Oscar pack, especially given its more accessible tenor compared to the other, more left-field films likely to make the shortlist.
Even if you've never read All Quiet on the Western Front or seen the prior film adaptation, you likely know the title, and that visibility will aid its chances immeasurably.
