Best Documentary Feature is one of the toughest awards to predict so far out, considering how few documentaries arrive on a tidal wave of hype months or even years prior to release.

But easily the most high-profile doc due to drop this year is The Beatles: Get Back, a Peter Jackson-directed look at the making of the Beatles' 1970 album Let It Be.

Jackson has been given access to a treasure trove of period footage, much of it never-before-seen, and will reportedly be employing the same ground-breaking remastering techniques he used on his First World War documentary They Shall Not Grow Old back in 2018.

If the Oscar victory of lightweight doc My Octopus Teacher this year proved that Oscar voters are seeking out breezy escapist docs rather than hard-hitting exposes right now, a doc about one of the most iconic bands of all time might play perfectly to voters still reeling from the (hopeful) end of the pandemic next year.
