20 Movies Which Could Win Oscars In 2022
18. West Side Story
Without question one of the most obviously awards-chasing movies due for release this year is Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story, which itself won 10 Oscars (including Best Picture) almost 60 years ago.
Splashy musicals have a history of being the most-nominated movies at the Academy Awards, though considering only a single remake has ever won Best Picture - Martin Scorsese's The Departed - the odds aren't terribly high that Spielberg's film will take home the Big One.
But its inevitably gorgeous crafts work make it a shoo-in for nominations and possible wins for Best Costume Design, Production Design, Cinematography, Film Editing, Sound, and assuming at least one new song has been composed for the film, Original Song.
Though the recent controversies surrounding star Ansel Elgort will likely kick him out of the running for Best Actor even if he's great, Rachel Zegler's performance as Maria is already earning massive buzz.
It also wouldn't be surprising at all if original star Rita Moreno - who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Anita - was awarded another Best Supporting Actress gong for her small role in the new film as Valentina, a gender-swapped version of Doc from the original.
And don't sleep on Ariana DeBose, who will be playing the new Anita.
