20 Must-See Billion Dollar Movies

2. The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight The Joker Batman

Gross: $1,004,934,033 (#46 of All Time)

The Dark Knight is the lowest-grossing billion dollar movie, but it's one of the very, very best of the bunch.

The Dark Knight is one of the most beloved and iconic films of modern times and it's definitely the best live-action superhero movie ever made (The Incredibles is the all-time best though), but nevertheless it's so, so much more than just a superhero movie.

It's a rich and complex crime drama, a haunting reflection of post-9/11 America, a brutally intense psychological thriller, an unforgettable acting showcase and an ingeniously-made and ridiculously enjoyable action movie too.

It's the way that The Dark Knight combines so many different genres and qualities into such a complex, powerful whole that has allowed it become such a cultural phenomenon.

It's now over ten years old and none of the spark is fading. Sure, there are some moments which don't work and Christian Bale is dreary as Batman, but otherwise this is a true classic in every sense.

Heath Ledger's Joker is the thing that's most well-remembered, but everything from the flawless directing to the fantastic screenplay elevate this to heights few other blockbusters could ever reach.
