20 Perfect Shots From Oscar Winning Movies

3. Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid - Blaze Of Glory

One of the all-time great closing shots in cinema history occurs as the titular rogues (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) run out into the open to make their last stand against the Bolivian soldiers lying in wait.

Rather than show the two legends get bloodily mowed down as most likely happened, the frame freezes on the pair running out, we merely hear the rattling gunfire and then see the image gradually tint to sepia, immortalising them forever more even though they surely didn't survive their final sortie.

It's tough to imagine the film ending any other way, and suits the mythic appeal of the two characters like a glove.
