20 Predictions For This Oscar Season's Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Oscar winner or Oscar bait?
The summer blockbuster movie season has definitively come to an end for another year, but of course, with "summer" starting in March these days, it'll be back before long.
With the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals kicking off, Oscar season is slamming into full gear, as directors and studios trot out their latest awards hopefuls in pursuit of those little gold statues that apparently mean so much.
Of course, as ever, not every "Oscar movie" can be a hit, and strong critical acclaim isn't even necessarily an indicator of Oscar success, but at the same time, if a movie scores mixed notices or less, it's probably D.O.A. as far as the Academy goes.
There are exceptions, of course, but didn't we collectively agree as a society to forget that Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close even exists?
Here are 20 predictions for this Oscar season's Rotten Tomatoes scores...
20. Sully (68%)
Predicted Critical Consensus: "A reliably game Tom Hanks delivers yet another compelling performance, even though Sully fudges the facts while reaching for dramatic impact."
Though Clint Eastwood is an Oscar-friendly director and Tom Hanks is, well, Tom Hanks, there are two major things working against this one. Firstly, it's clear from the trailers alone that it embellishes the investigation into the Miracle on the Hudson to make Sully's heroism seem more scrutinised than it actually was.
Secondly, it's only 96 minutes long, which is uncommonly short for Oscar fare. It could mean the movie is merely concise, or it could be that Eastwood struggled to shape the film in post-production and it may end up criticised for feeling rushed or busily edited.
Best to expect solid work but nothing outstanding, though Hanks will add a ton of class to it either way.
