6. Relay

Fountain of Youth
Bleecker Street

David Mackenzie's new crime thriller Relay is absolutely electrifying for the bulk of its runtime, focused on Ash (Riz Ahmed), a fixer who tries to help a whistle-blower, Sarah (Lily James), escape the pursuit of a corporation she planned to expose.

In the third act Sarah is kidnapped by operatives hired by the company, prompting Ash - who has become emotionally involved with Sarah - to race to rescue her.

But at this point Mackenzie drops a clunky, contrived plot twist in our lap that basically derails the entire rest of the movie.

Once Ash reaches Sarah, she tasers him, revealing that she actually isn't a hostage - rather, she's the secret leader of the operative group.

Basically, the entire events of the film were part of an elaborate sting designed to trap Ash himself, due to another deal he brokered between a whistle-blower and a corporation, Optimo, at the start of the film.

Optimo cooked up this entire fake whistle-blower plot with Sarah, using her as a honey trap to find out Ash's identity and capture him.

There's definitely a way that this twist could've worked, because conceptually it's interesting, but as executed in the final film it comes so wildly out of left-field that it feels more like an ass-pull than something given sufficient creative thought.
