4. Novocaine
Novocaine is a mostly fun action thriller that ultimately stumbles at the finish line with its climactic romantic swing.
The movie follows Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid), a timid bank executive who lives with a congenital insensitivity to pain, but once his co-worker and love interest Sherry (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped by bank robbers, he's forced to spring into action for the first time.
Hilariously brutal hijinks ensue, before the mid-film twist reveals that Sherry was actually in on the heist all along, and is in fact the adoptive sister of the robbery's mastermind, Simon (Ray Nicholson).
It's an interesting if predictable wrinkle, albeit one that's ultimately mishandled given that the film still ends with Nathan romantically involved with Sherry, no matter that she's behind bars.
Though the film bends over backwards to retroactively soften Sherry's complicity in the heist and the numerous deaths left in its wake, she still bares a fair brunt of the responsibility per her involvement, and for the film to gloss over this makes the closing love-in ring totally hollow.
You deserved better, Nathan - a nice girl who isn't out here robbing banks and indirectly getting people killed.
