20 Recent Movie Remakes NOBODY Asked For

12. How to Train Your Dragon

The Crow Movie Remakes
DreamWorks

Most of the recent live-action remakes of classic animated films have naturally targeted the very best animations from decades past, so it was tough to make sense of DreamWorks' decision to remake something as recent as 2010's brilliant How to Train Your Dragon.

Being so recent in cinema history, the animated film holds up incredibly well both in terms of its visuals and its storytelling, so it was naturally tough to view this remake as anything more than a cynical attempt to wring more money from the enterprise.

And while that's basically true, at least the remake brought back the original film's co-writer and co-director, Dean DeBlois, to assume the same duties once again.

Yes, How to Train Your Dragon isn't a story that "needed" to exist in live-action form, and this more-or-less shot-for-shot remake can't get close to touching the majesty of its animated predecessor, but at least it's well-made and solidly acted, making it feel just a little less like a craven cash-grab.

Speaking of which, its strong success at the box office has ensured that DreamWorks plans to forge ahead with remakes of the other animated sequels, because why wouldn't they?
