11. The Toxic Avenger
1984's The Toxic Avenger is such a singular piece of work that the prospect of remaking it has always seemed a bit ridiculous.
Troma's gloriously deranged superhero film became a cult hit and spawned a wider media empire, including three sequels, but by the time 2000's Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV came out, it seemed like every drop had been wrung from the unexpected IP.
A remake of the original film was first announced in 2010, with Arnold Schwarzenegger even rumoured to appear, but it wasn't until 2021 that the new film was finally shot, with Peter Dinklage starring as the title character.
Even with some surprisingly high-profile casting choices - Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, and Jacob Tremblay - and Macon Blair intriguingly serving as writer-director, many questioned the utility, artistic or otherwise, of remaking something that's so firmly of its time.
Well, after several years of release delays, The Toxic Avenger finally came out back in August, and it was pretty good.
You can argue it's a bit too slick and "clean" compared to Troma's scuzzy original, but it's tonally consistent with what came before and doesn't do anything sacrilegious, which is more than enough to get a pass.
