A shot-for-shot remake of the 1997 Funny Games, the 2007 version is a masterclass in delivering stomach-churning tension to a horrified audience. It all starts when two men Peter and Paul arrive at the door of the Farber family's lake house. All they want is to borrow some eggs. Apparently. What ensues is a series of torturous games, perfectly paced with the nefarious actions of the two once-polite men becoming increasingly serious. Peter and Paul toy with the lives of the Farber family before eventually killing them off one-by-one. Everything about this film makes you feel uncomfortable from the awkwardly pristine white of Peter and Paul's outfits to the random, ear-splitting outburst of metal music. The most unsettling part about this tension is that you actually become fearful of Peter and Paul and what they will do next, particularly after the break the fourth wall by talking to the audience and rewinding the film. The experience is such that you are left feeling like Peter and Paul aren't even actors Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet but real psychopaths at large targeting wealthy American's holiday homes.
