20 Sports Documentaries You Must See Before You Die
2. Icarus
There have been rumours about Russian athletes using performance enhancing drugs to make them better for decades. From seeing it in movies like Rocky IV where Ivan Drago has steroids pumping through his veins to looking at some of their athletes and assuming that they're on the sauce, it's always been an accusation, but never a fact until a movie called Icarus was released.
The film's director, Bryan Fogel, was actually in the process of creating an entirely different film that involved him taking illegal PEDs that would be undetectable and would allow him to compete in a bike race without getting caught. He got in contact Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of the Russian anti-doping laboratory who was set to help him achieve this.
However, when Rodchenkov started to confide in Fogel about the doping cover-up that he was involved in and how many Russian Olympians were involved, an entirely new and far more interesting documentary was born out of it.
Cheating and sports may go hand-in-hand like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but it's still shocking to see how far people are willing to go to win.
