20 Sports Documentaries You Must See Before You Die

12. Hoop Dreams

If you've played any sport at any level, it would be impossible to not dream about doing it professionally. While many strive towards their goals of being good enough to play for a team of their choice, very few actually get the chance to live that dream.

It's part of the reason that basketball epic, Hoop Dreams, resonates with anyone who has competed, whether it's by basketball or any other sport. The documentary follows two talented high school players, William Gates and Arthur Agee, who transfer to St. Joseph High School to help them try and achieve their goals of joining the NBA.

While somewhat similar to the LeBron James documentary that we mentioned earlier on this list, Hoop Dreams doesn't just focus on the basketball talents of these two promising players, but also the socio-economic aspects that played a factor in their time at St. Joseph High School.

Although it's a relatively long film, clocking in at just under three hours long, you'll barely notice the time when you're watching it as following them try to beat the odds truly is a fascinating experience.
