20 Surprisingly Great Horror Movie Remakes
7. Suspiria
For literally decades horror fans had joked about the possibility of anyone being bold enough to try remaking Dario Argento's giallo classic Suspiria, and in 2018 it finally happened.
As talented a director as Luca Guadagnino is, it seemed positively ridiculous to hire the guy behind acclaimed drama Call Me by Your Name to helm a surreal horror film about witches, with Fifty Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson starring no less.
But Guadagnino ultimately delivered an impressively ambitious reimagining of the original film which managed to both pay respect to it and deliver something quite different.
Suspiria 2018 ditches the classic stylistic tropes of the Argento film - especially neon lighting and that Goblin score - for something more muted and "realistic," while shifting the story into a more political dimension amid the German Autumn of 1977.
With its beefier runtime - clocking in at almost a full hour longer than the original - the new Suspiria dares to expand the existing mythology, while delivering some bewilderingly unsettling set-pieces and superb performances from Johnson and Tilda Swinton, the latter playing three distinct characters.
Suspiria 2018 cleverly resisted the urge to simply repeat what Argento did, instead striking out on its own and establishing itself as a terrific companion piece to its inspiration.
