20 Terrible 2015 Movies That Should Never Have Happened

15. Poltergeist

The Plot: A family moves into their new suburban home only to find their young daughter (Kennedi Clements) kidnapped by paranormal entities manifesting within the home. With the help of a famed occult specialist (Jared Harris), they desperately hope to return her to the land of the living before it's too late. Why It Shouldn't Exist: It's cinema at its most pointless and cash-grabbing. Tobe Hooper's 1982 original has aged stupendously well, and so there's literally no point for this limp retread, which lacks the intense atmosphere of the original, relying on limp scares and only really being elevated at all by Harris' amusing performance. It's well made but ultimately hollow, full of shocks that have become generic tropes in the three-plus decades since the original film, and criminally doing nothing with talented leads Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt. Thankfully it was low-key enough that it's easily forgotten.
