20 Terrible Oscar Nominations From The Past Ten Years - Corrected
6. American Hustle Getting Nominated For Ten Oscars
It's safe to say many people felt pretty happy when American Hustle, which was nominated for a ridiculous TEN Oscars, went home with nothing. American Hustle is perfectly good and the acting is great, but the story is weak and it lacks substance.
It deserved the nominations for Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, but the nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Actor? Not so much.
It wasn't one of the year's best, David O. Russell's directing was very good but not quite top-five level, the script's great dialogue was undermined by the flat story, the editing was nothing special and Christian Bale was far less interesting than the other performers.
Corrected:
For Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, those nods should've gone to the modern masterpiece that is Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer, a visually superb and fantastically brilliant post-apocalyptic thriller that has the richness and depth of a great novel, despite only being a two-hour movie.
For Best Actor, Hugh Jackman's ferociously intense and harrowing career-best performance in Prisoners was a terrible snub, while The Conjuring deserved recognition for its beautifully-edited jump scares in Best Film Editing.
As for a tenth Best Picture nominee, the enthralling art-house drama The Great Beauty was one of 2013's finest and deserved a spot.
