20 Terrible Oscar Nominations From The Past Ten Years - Corrected

18. Hacksaw Ridge For Best Picture And Best Actor

Bohemian Rhapsody Oscar
Summit Entertainment

Hacksaw Ridge is a solid World War II drama that's brilliantly made and often powerful, but it wasn't one of the top films of 2016. After all, it only becomes great in the second half, which takes place on the war-front.

Those parts of the film are superb, but the first half is dreary and often drags, while the ever-overrated Andrew Garfield's awkward performance doesn't help either. Out of the film's six other nominations, those for Mel Gibson's directing and the film's sound and editing were fine, but Best Picture and Best Actor shouldn't have happened.

Corrected:

The big snub of the 2017 Oscars was Martin Scorsese's wonderful epic religious drama Silence, which somehow only got nominated for Best Cinematography. That should've been up for Best Picture along with many other awards. Had ten films been nominated, Park Chan-wook's excellent romantic drama The Handmaiden would've been a great pick for a tenth slot.

As for Best Actor, that's simple: either Robert Downey Jr's tremendous performance in Captain America: Civil War (which might be his single best turn as Iron Man) or Ryan Reynolds' hysterically funny turn in Deadpool. Who cares if those performances were in superhero films? A great performance is still a great performance whatever genre it's in.
