Whilst Nolan broke through with the fractured crime narrative of an amnesiac looking for his wife's killer, it actually wasn't his feature film debut. A few years prior he'd produced the independent picture Following, about an author who stalks people for inspiration. Shot on the minuscule budget of $6,000, the film took a year to make, as they only managed to film around fifteen minutes of footage every Saturday.
19. He's In Love With Cillian Murphy
That's not just a glib comment on how often Nolan has cast the actor, by the way, having used him for each of the Dark Knight films and as the sorta antagonist of Inception (if you were going to make that joke, you'd go with Michael Caine, who's appeared in every film the director's done since Batman Begins). No, apparently on the set of that first Dark Knight film Nolan noticed how gorgeous Murphy's blue eyes were, and insisted they come up with ways to make him take his glasses off so you could see them more clearly.
