20 Things You Didn’t Know About Dune

8. Frank Herbert Was A Political Speechwriter

Ecological consultant, journalist, best-selling author - is there anything this man can’t do? Back in the fifties, when Herbert was still cutting his teeth with sci-fi short stories, he brought home the bacon working as a political speechwriter.

This is likely another lightbulb moment for fans of the text, wondering where Herbert got his inspiration for the portentous, philosophically dense speech of his characters and the high political slant of the entire plot.

Much like his journalism, however, Franky Boy wasn’t always that successful; every campaign he worked on never actually succeeded. Probably because the citizens that ended up listening to these speeches couldn’t make head nor tail of Messiahs, Mentats or Gom Jabbars.

Total goblin. Quit the food and beverage industry after ten years to try my hand at writing nonsense online. I have a huge passion for film, television, cats, art, tattoos, food, anarchy and classic literature (mainly Dune). Currently based at my mum's house, I can be best reached on Instagram (@charlie_marx) where I attempt to soothe my mental health with memes.
